What are ACE’s?
Adverse childhood experience (ACE) is a traumatic event that occurs before the age of 18. Some examples of ACEs include abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. A lot of people experience ACEs regardless of upbringing, race and ethnicity. Adverse childhood experiences can increase a person’s likelihood of developing heart disease, depression, diabetes, substance use disorder, and more. The risk of developing one or more of these health problems increases with higher rates of ACEs.

Can you help?
Just because someone has had adverse childhood experiences doesn't mean they are “doomed” for a terrible life. Positive experiences or interactions can counteract the ACEs and help protect the child from negative outcomes.
